My Favorite Flavors
On a hot, summer day only one thing cheers me up – a snowball. I prefer half-chocolate half-coffee.
I like the way it’s creamy but icy at the same time. Some of my friends get ice cream on top or
whipped cream, but I like mine simple with just syrup and ice. I enjoy eating my snowball outside,
racing to finish before the sun gets to it. I don’t think you can go wrong with any snowball flavor,
but my favorites are cherry, nectar cream, ice cream, chocolate, and coffee. I’m always tempted to
try something new, like “king cake” or “orange,” but every time I get to the counter, I decide to get
half-chocolate half-coffee.

Ms. Ortolano for her genius.
You can thank a NewOrleans transplant
for our most popular local flavor, nectar.
I.L. Lyons, a Civil War officer and
pharmacist, landed in New Orleans
in 1866. His nectar creation, a super
sweet pink-red, vanilla almond flavor,
was first sold to pharmacists as syrup.
Pharmacists mixed up Nectar Soda
Water and Nectar Cream Sodas, and
used it to top the ice cream sold at their
counters. The syrup eventually went from soda fountains to
snowball stands.
We opened our very first snowball shop last year; it’s in our
Carrollton store in New Orleans’ Mid City. Pink nectar creams
compete with chocolate, strawberry, coconut, and a wholemenu
of other flavors, but kids of all ages still pick the blueberry and
spearmint because the colors stick to your tongue.
I like yellow snowballs, and my brother Alex gets chocolate. My dad always
says he doesn’t want a snowball, but then he eats half of mine.

I love snowballs because they are sweet, icy and
cold. My favorite flavor is grape. Snowballs are
great on a hot day. Let’s go get some now.
