T
he arrival of Spring’s breezy days launches festival season
in Louisiana and Mississippi and nearly every weekend is
covered with exciting celebrations of the area’s food, music
and culture. Events range from carnivals like the Lafourche
Swamp Stomp (Thibodaux, March 16th) to massive multi-million dollar
productions like the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (seven days
spanning the last weekend in April and the first weekend in May).
Strawberry lovers should head to downtown Ponchatoula for the 42nd
Annual Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival April 12 to 14. You can stock up
on just-picked, fresh strawberries and get your fill of strawberry delights,
live music, and arts and crafts. Since its inception the festival has served as
a benefit for the non-profit and charitable organizations that are the only
vendors on the festival grounds. It has grown into a massive fundraiser,
generating millions of dollars to worthy community organizations.

That same weekend (April 11 - 14) over 400,000 people will attend the
New Orleans’ French Quarter Festival, where Rouses hosts their World
Championship Crawfish Eating Contest, and serves up 40,000 pounds of
their spicy, delicious boiled crawfish. What started as a little neighborhood
festival in 1984 with a handful of jazz musicians and a few neighborhood
restaurants has grown into one of the largest free festivals in the country,
with 22 music stages and 90 booths serving delicious Louisiana foods.

Music lovers will finish out the very busy month of April at the New
Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival or Festival International de Louisiane
in Lafayette (April 24 - 28). Another freebie, Festival International is
a celebration of local talent as well as French, African, Caribbean, and
Hispanic art, food, and music. Performers and vendors travel from around
the world to showcase their goods and talents over the long weekend.
